Cusco For Unesco World Book Capital
Lima, May 2 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian librarians signed an agreement requesting UNESCO to declare Cusco as 2009 World Book Capital, on occasion of the 400th anniversary of the edition of "Comentarios Reales" by "El Inca" Garcilaso de la Vega.
According to local media reports on Tuesday, the request was signed during the 1st National Congress of Public Libraries of Peru, held in the Imperial City this week.
Each year, one city of the world is declared World Book Capital, a title also given to Madrid, Alejandria (Egypt), New Delhi and Antwerp (Belgium) in previous editions.
The appeal, to be formalized by the provincial municipality of Cusco, also includes a program of activities related to culture, like book editions and promotion of reading.
